ABOUT Cape Town

With one of the world's most spectacular mountains, miles of Atlantic Coast and acres of verdant winelands, it's possible to fall in love immediately with Cape-Town.
Cape Town can please you for a week and even wanting more. But if you only have a couple of days, focus on what the city has best; the food, wine, scenery, shopping and the beach.

Cape Town isn't a real African city; it is more of a pocket California. But that's part of the appeal. Cape Town has the bars, the restaurants, the beautiful people, the backdrop. And the locals - laid-back, so friendly and welcoming - give the city the necessary African appeal. The city is changing fast and with a Western European time zone a great place for a vacation in Africa.

On a clear day, make sure you don't miss the beautifull scenery of Table Mountain. The winelands surrounding Cape Town deliver phenomenal food and views within an hour's drive. Then definately make time to enjoy another of the city's USPs, the beach. Especially during sun-set!

Facts about Cape Town

Best time to visit Cape Town

Lying between the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, Cape Town enjoys mild winters and pleasant summers.
Summer temperatures (in November to February) range from around 15 to 27 degrees Celsius (60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit), a Mediterranean climate with little rain, 11 hours a day sunshine or more and long sunny evenings sets a party mood.

In the winter (June to August) average temperatures are between 7 to 20 degrees Celsius (45 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit).
Rainfall is moderate throughout the year and there are refreshing sea breezes which can sometimes turn a little bracing during the winter.

In recent years, the normally prevailing summer south-easter wind, the famous Cape Doctor, seems to have abated. Maybe El Nino or global warming is to blame. If the wind does blow and you're after a tan or the beach, remember that mornings are usually much less windy, and that certain beaches (Clifton, Boulders) are much more protected than others.

Conventional local wisdom used to be that spring (September and October) and autumn (April and May) are the smart times to visit Cape Town. They are usually balmy in-between seasons, with little wind, when nature is at its showiest. If you're into flowers or whale-watching, or seeing the vineyards at their best, these are great seasons to be in the Cape.

Whatever season you have chosen to visit Cape Town, be warned of the old joke. Cape Town has four seasons - sometimes in the same day. This is especially true if you plan to go hiking or be outdoors. Check the weather forecasts in local papers or on radio. Or phone 40881 for detailed short-term forecasts.

World Cup 2010
The Soccer World Cup is the one of the biggest sporting events in the world. In 2010 this great event will be hosted by South Africa and this will be a first for the African continent. Cape Town will be fortunate enough to host nine world cup matches, including the semi finals.

Cape Town is all optimistic that stadiums and infrastructure will be ready for their visitors. Besides, South Africa has already hosted two world cup competitions: the Rugby World Cup in 1995 and the Cricket World Cup 2003 and both events were a great succes.

Construction and upgrades on the stadiums started in early 2007 and progress can be checked out at www.southafrica.info/2010. Book your flights and accommodation as early as possible. Even if you don’t get tickets to watch a game in a stadium, there will be many venues showing the games live with beer tents, food courts, entertainment and much more.

The stadium in Cape Town will be built in Greenpoint which is close to the V&A Waterfront, city centre and the harbour. The existing stadium will be demolished and a completely new stadium with a retractable roof and a capacity of 70 000 will be constructed in its place. It will host six first round matches, one second round match, one quarter final and one semi-final.

Besided Cape Town, the other stadiums are: Ellis Park in Johannesburg, Royal Bafokeng in Rustenburg, Peter Mokaba in Polokwane, Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, Loftus Versveld in Pretoria, King Senzangakhona in Durban, Nelson Mandela Stadium in Port Elizabeth and Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.
