The capital and the largest city of Spain: Madrid. Where nobody has dinner before ten at night, and at daybreak people go either to bed or to work. And, where the most beautiful museum trio of Europe is to be found.

The Madrid Golden art triangle
Artistical Madrid is (much) more than these three museums, but this trio sets the tone on international level and therefore you definetely may not miss them. The Museo del Prado (with classic works of Diego Velázquez and Francisco Goya), the museum Thyssen-Bornemisza (with a mix of modern and classic from a private collection) and the museum Reina Sofía (with modern art and o. a. the Guernica of Pablo Picasso). Other museums which are also worth a visit, the Nationally Archaeological Museum, the José Padilla Museum, the Medically Anthropological Museum and the Manuel Benedito Museum. Anyway, that is quite a lot for a weekend citytrip to Madrid, but focussing on the first three would give a good balance to the sparkling nightlife of Madrid, which for sure will draw your attention.
At night, life begins in Madrid
Even in the rest of Spain, Madrid is known for the large number of bars, clubs and discos. Madrid has more than 14,000 bars, clubs, restaurants and discos, and that is more than you will find in most other cities in the world. The typical young Madrileen dances and drinks till deeply in the night, eats some sweet deep-fried "churros", he takes a shower and goes to work. Another popular thing among ‘Madrileños’ is the ‘botellón’, drinking on the streets. Seven days a week the streets of Madrid are full with people: young, old, tourist or local, everybody enjoys the extensive streetlife. Most bars, discos and clubs you will find in the districts Chueca and Malasaña. Good streets for going out in the center are Calle Bilbao, Tribunal and Alonso Martinez, but also the district Moncloa at the west side of Madrid; the districts Sol and Las Huertas around the center are just as busy during the night as during daytime.
Bull fighting in Madrid
Madrid has the largest bullfight arena of Spain, it is called "Las Ventas". The arena was opened in 1931 and the arena can have 25,000 spectators watching a bullfight. From March until June, during the so-called "San Isidro period" of Madrid, every day bullfights will take place, and during the rest of the season until october only on Sunday. These days the arena is used as well for other events, like music concerts. Despite protests from other parts of Spain (Barcelona) and from foreign countries, at this moment there are no plans to stop with the bullfights. .
Delicious food in Madrid
Madrid has its own traditionally Spanish kitchen, that is quite different than the kitchen in the rest of Spain. Meat and fish, many legumes, eggs, hundred kinds of sausages and many stews. The 'cocido madrileño' is the mostly traditional example of a typical Madrileense stew. The food in restaurants is very 'casera', in other words domestic. It means that the food is prepared freshly, in many cases with Spanish products. In the city in many places the typical Spanish tapas are eaten still on the traditional manner: for free with a drink.
