gastronomy. Paris is today one of the world's leading business and cultural

Facts about Paris
Population: 2,1 million people.
Area: 105 sq km/ 41 sq miles
Time Zone: GMT/ UTC + 1 ()
Best time to visit Paris
As the old song says, Paris is at its best in springtime, even if it is
sometimes a little wet. In winter Paris has all sorts of cultural events,
while in summer the weather is warm and lazy - sometimes sizzling. Things
can get a bit hectic around Bastille Day and towards the end of the year.
How to get to Paris
France's Aéroport Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport is the major
international airport, flights go in and out from every where and it is
only 14 miles north of Paris. Buses run frequently (every 12 minutes)
and trains every 15 minutes from the airport to the city
There are two other secondary airports; Orly (20 kilometres away from
the city centre), and Le Bourget (15 kilometres away). There are plenty
of taxi’s that can bring you from the airports to your apartment
in Paris.
If you are coming via the Netherlands or Belgium: the very fast TGV services
leave from Amsterdam and Brussels.
The preferred route from Britain to France is the Channel Tunnel (or Chunnel)
between London (via Folkestone) and Paris (via Calais), a trip that takes
only three hours.
You can also take the ferry, but Eurostar is perhaps the most chilled
and luxurious way to get to Paris, and you can bring your car on board
as well.
Transportation inside Paris
Paris offers one of the greatest underground networks of public transportation.
Click here ( link naar www.ratp.info ) for the website of the metro-network.
The metro (subway) runs daily from 5:30am-12:30am. Transportation maps
are available at subway stations. Tickets can be purchased singly or in
books of 10. They are available at the stations and from tobacconists
and must be validated before boarding.
The train system is also very impressive, and will get you quickly to
most places in France. There are 6 main train stations in Paris: Gare
Saint-Lazare at 108 Saint-Lazare -8th arrondissement, Gare Montparnasse
at Place R. Dautry -15th arrondissement, Gare de Lyon at 20 Boulevard
Diderot -12th arrondissement, and the biggest ones La Gare du Nord at
Place du 8 Mai 1945 -10th arrondissement, and Gare de l'Est at Place Napoleon
III -10th arrondissement.
The buses are fine for travelling between Paris and other countries, but
in France itself they're not so popular.
Of course Paris has plenty of taxi's.

Restaurants in Paris
French cooking is one of most famous cuisines in the world, so a visit
to Paris should integrate at least a visite into the one of the many tables
of Paris. The choice is huge, as well in specialities as in range of price.
There are several different types of menus, offering varying degrees of
selection and price, which it is helpful to understand:
La carte: Everything on the normal menu, usually more expensive. Main
courses arrive with a garnish of vegetables. There might also be a plat
du jour (dish of the day).
Menu prix-fixe: Fixed-price meal, usually consists of four courses and
may include wine. Better than à la carte, quality is good, tax
and service are included. Many restaurants offer several set menus at
different price levels. Look for a menu du jour (a set menu of the day),
which will generally be freshest and best, and check out what those around
you have ordered.
Menu dégustation/menu surprise: A tasting menu, presenting you
with a procession of small servings (chosen by the chef if it is the surprise
menu). The simple restriction: everyone at the table must have the same
menu.
Menu touristique: Uninteresting tourist food, not recommended.
Table d'hôte: Traditional home cooking offered in country restaurants,
Relatively cheap.
Shopping in Paris
Paris is a the perfect place to shop, whether you're someone who can afford
Lacroix or just a simple souvenir. Many quartiers (=area’s) still
specialise, and the myriad boutiques are often worth a visit in themselves.
Most shops are open Monday to Saturday 0900/1000-1900/2000 and close between
1200-1430 for lunch. The lively flea markets are full of bargains.
